Today was a very long day spent on buses. We had been told that the bus ride from Caraz to Chimbote was five hours but it ended up taking 6 ½. We drove through the Canyon del Pato, which is a spectacular gorge that runs for miles and we passed through 36 tunnels. The scenery was great, and Lincoln ranks it as his favourite drive so far on our trip. At one point we had to stop the bus to remove rocks from a recent landslide, and actually there were still small rocks coming down the hill but luckily none of these made it as far as the road. It took half an hour to clear a space wide enough for the bus to go through, and that was our excitement for the day. After this delay, the bus stopped at a restaurant for around 30 minutes for people to eat which delayed us even more. We arrived in Chimbote (a smelly town because of all the fish factories) at the main bus terminal and promptly bought tickets to Trujillo, which was another three hours away. Once in Trujillo, we caught a cab to Huanchaco, a beachside town 20 minutes outside of Trujillo. We finally arrived at the Casa Suisa hostel around 7:30pm and went out in search of something for dinner. We hadn’t yet had our “treat” of a meal after doing our hike, so we chose a fancy-looking place called Kero to eat at. The prices were more expensive than in Caraz, that’s for sure, but still cheaper than in Cuzco. We had delicious meals and even some wine.
