La Paz (May 26, 2006)

Today we had planned to visit Tiwanaku, some ruins from a pre-Incan civilization. However, after the tiring day we had yesterday we decided to sleep in and have a relaxing day walking around La Paz seeing some of the things we didn’t have time to see on Wednesday. We like La Paz, and it has a lot of things to do. When I woke up my headache was gone, which made me happy. We spent a while on the computer updating the website (the hostel’s internet connection is the best we’ve found yet in SA). When we finally ventured out, we noticed that many people were walking around with flowers, and there were several cake vendors out. What special day could it be? As the day went on, we eventually figured out that it was Mother’s Day in Bolivia! Moms were out for lunch with their daughters, hanging out in the plazas, kids were carrying presents and flowers for their Moms.

We ate some lunch, picked up the pictures from our bike tour yesterday, and made our way to the Killi Killi Lookout. It was a tough walk up, but the views at the top were worth it. We made our way back down, wandering the streets, passed some nice parks and the football stadium, and eventually arrived at the archaeological museum. This museum had many artefacts from the Tiwanaku era as well as the civilizations that came before them, and a little bit from the Incas. After visiting the museum we felt like we didn’t need to go to the actual site, and decided that we would leave for Sorata tomorrow.

We walked back along the Prada in rush-hour traffic again. There are zillions of minivans (called Micros) with touts hanging out the windows calling out where the micros go, and taxis zooming by. They really do carpooling well here! We had planned on going to meet our bike tour people for dinner tonight, but after we got back to the hostel we were very lazy and ended up eating tomato soup, pretzels and wine for dinner, and watching a movie with an American family (a girl who had been travelling around SA for a few months and her parents who had come to travel with her for a couple of weeks). The owner lighted the electric fireplace for us and we brought a sleeping bag down so it was very cozy.
